5 Common Mistakes to Avoid in Your Perth Job Search

Searching for a job can be a challenging and often frustrating process. It’s easy to get discouraged when you’re not seeing the results you want, but sometimes the reason you’re not landing your dream job is because of mistakes you may be making without even realizing it. At FlexiStaff, we’ve seen many job seekers make these common mistakes, so we’ve put together a list of five things to avoid in your job search.

1. Applying for every job

It can be tempting to apply for every job that looks remotely interesting, but this can hurt your chances of landing a job. Employers can tell when you’ve sent a generic application, and they’re much more likely to be impressed by a well-tailored application that addresses the specific requirements of the job. Focus your energy on the jobs you’re truly qualified for and that align with your career goals.

2. Not researching the company

When you’re applying for a job, it’s important to research the company thoroughly. Look at their website, social media accounts, and any news articles or press releases to get a sense of their mission, values, and recent accomplishments. This information can help you tailor your application and show that you’re genuinely interested in the company.

3. Not following up

After you’ve submitted your application, it’s important to follow up with the employer to express your interest in the role and reiterate your qualifications. This could be a simple email or phone call, but it can make a big difference in showing your enthusiasm for the job.

4. Not preparing for the interview

An interview is your chance to make a good impression and show the employer that you’re the best candidate for the job. Not preparing for the interview, whether it’s by researching the company, practicing common interview questions, or dressing appropriately, can hurt your chances of getting hired.

5. Not networking

Networking is a crucial part of any job search, but it’s often overlooked by job seekers. Searching for jobs on online jobs boards, or through company websites works – but we recommend taking a more personal approach. Attend industry events, connect with people on LinkedIn, and reach out to your network for potential job leads or introductions. Building relationships with people in your industry can open up opportunities you may not have otherwise known about.
